RJD2 writes on the net about sampling and implies that clearance is bullshit. He says De La Soul & DJ Shadow don’t clear samples, or at least didn’t on their breakthrough albums. …. “my views on this are directly related to the current state of the music industry. namely 2 big things: 1-your average indie record is lucky to recoup expenses. if it generates 10-30k,...

New-millennium instrumental hip hop is still so hot. Look below for my favorite track from each kingpin. P.S. Caribou is not Hip Hop. I wont let you guys hurt him. P.P.S. If I had planned better I’d have posted these in the opposite order. I’m trying to tell you the Ratatat track is better than the others, OK?

Here’s a playlist of 82 awesome songs. Spotify’s selection and sound quality are sick. If you subscribe to the playlist, you’ll get whatever else I add. And all this shit is free.  Streaming music just got real.

Alexandre Desplat is finally the most powerful composer in Hollywood. He can have nearly any film he wants, and his fee is the highest. This is great news because he’s really fucking good.

“My aversion to Conan O’Brien sounds like a generational rant, but it’s really not. The two Jimmys, Kimmel and Fallon, are both younger than Conan (Kimmel by 4 years, Fallon by 11), and though it’s undeniable that their shows are powered by plenty of free-floating delirium and rib-nudging post-Letterman detachment, both of these guys know how to relax – which, to me (sorry to be so...

End-weekend May 30th
I finished The Wire. Calling it the best show ever is obvious. Is there a better way to put it? ‘Like Spinning Plates’ deserves more notice than it gets. It may be a top-10 Radiohead song. Also, the best backwards song ever. Basketball is not like jazz. At all. In so many ways, they’re not similar. ‘White Noise’ is my favorite post-rock song in a few years....
